Main trends of Miami Fashion Week, Resort 2018

June 8, 2017

Now that the flamboyant Miami Fashion Week, Resort 2018 is over, I'm making a break in my vacations to urgently blog this for us to see which interesting trends the Latin American designers have offered to our scrutiny this time.

I have to say right away that it went beyond swimwear, and showed evening and occasion dresses by such known designers as Rene Ruiz and Angel Sanchez, saving the creative juices for Miami Swim Week where the tops and bottoms will be displayed in abundance later in July. Still, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Fisico, Shantall Lacayo and other designers went for a combination of clear simple cuts with a focus on interesting fabric or pattern for their selected beachwear designs.

Ruffles and draping, and all things feminine.

This is still relevant both for evening wear and more casual looks, ruffles, frills, and flounces are strongly present in the designs of Silvia Tcherassi, Angel Sanchez, Shantall Lacayo.

Go with glitter or go home. Designers are suggesting glitter in metallic or golden tones for the season, and this metallic look works both for men and women. Disco look is trending now, as is the "alien" garments suggested among others by Custo Barcelona, Fisico and Rene Ruiz.

Cartoons and emoji. If among the looks below it occurs to you that you have accidentally seen a Flintstones cartoon character or a Toy story cowboy, you are not alone! Designers like Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and Shantall Lacayo are currently really playing the emoji thing, which I seriously "heart" ;-)

Going with the global trend that is picking momentum now, some of Miami fashion week designers have decided to show mixed collections, both men and womenswear. A personal discovery for me was a Peruvian fashion designer Yirko Sivrich who very persuasively suggested, or rather mandated, that long sleeveless jackets and sheer overalls are not an exclusively women's zone anymore, good news for everybody!

Jumpsuits are the all-time classics of resort collections. Clear cut, comfortable looking and extremely wearable, I have seen a few that I would consider wearing myself!

Massive bags are overtaking the world, after the recent outrage about Balenciaga's upcycled Bazar shopper and later the Ikea-esque bulky bags, everyone has decide that this is ok. Even more so for resort collection shows, since you can accommodate all your beach towels and sunblocks and still look chic. Hence these oversized backpacks of Yirko Sivirich and blazing bags of Agatha R. de la Prada.

It's all for now fashion people, until later!
